Resumo: | The climacteric or perimenopause is a transitional phase that precedes menopause itself in the woman's life. It is a process in which female hormones gradually progress to a follicular decrease due to female aging itself. This, in turn, may or may not trigger neurogenic, psychogenic and metabolic manifestations common in this phase, which are dependent on the socio-economic-cultural context in which the woman is inserted. This research had as main objective to identify and analyze the climacteric manifestations through the Menopausal Index of Blatt and Kupperman and its correlation to the socio-economic-cultural context of women belonging to the age group of 40 to 59 years old, living in the urban area in the Municipality of Santa Fé do Sul - SP. As it is a field research, of the descriptive and quantitative type, 372 women aged 40 to 59 years were selected through the sampling process, according to information from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics of the Municipality, in 2000 , and, of the total sample, 111 women were within the scope of the research. However, data were collected through home visits according to the reference unit, a census map. Subsequently, the questionnaire for the interview was applied, which contained questions related to climacteric manifestations, to the socio-cultural and reproductive context to characterize the intensity and prevalence of symptoms. Thus, the data analysis was characterized, respectively, by statistical percentages. After obtaining the results, it can be observed that the symptomatological intensity of the studied sample was mild, in which the most prevalent manifestations in the age group 45-49, 50-54 and 55-59 were irritability followed by vasomotor symptoms and arthralgia / myalgia, while in the 40-44 age group, nervousness was found to be the most evident manifestation. It was also found that the climatic manifestations are directly linked to the socio-economic-cultural context of those assessed resulting from the non-acceptance of the female physiological aging process and the aesthetic standard required by society. |
