Resumo: Human development models need to be adapted to the present paradigm, which invariably chooses sustainable processes. Among the most impacting environmental activities, civil construction contributes greatly to the unbridled advances on natural resources, since a construction project’s influence is not limited to the construction site, but also impacts a much larger area of influence. Thus, the study of the relationship between nature and buildings becomes fundamentally necessary. Aspects such as energy efficiency, neighbourhood / building relationship, and sustainable practices, are some of the parameters adopted as criteria in the formulation of methodologies of building performance classification and environmental certification. However, the complexity of the present classifications and certifications discourage their use. Therefore, the present study looked to contribute with a simplified instrument, which indicates the aspects worthy of intervention in order to obtain environmental certification of existing buildings. The development of this tool was oriented by the standards established by Alta Qualidade Ambiental – AQUA and Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design – LEED. Case studies employing the tool point the major environmental flaws, and energy consumption shortcomings in an existing building, establishing a preliminary assessment of the environmental level of the buildings, and allowing the entrepreneur to gauge the adjustments necessary to achieve certification.
