Resumo: The present levels of production and consumption, the explosive demographic growth and the dangerous growing exploitation of natural resources, take humankind into the new millennium in a state of alert. The growth of the cities is inevitable and irreversible. The building industry has a large impact on the environment, and due to the influence architecture has on the cities, it is fundamental that architecture itself presents solutions and alternatives which conduce to a sustainable development. The study of the relationship between cities and nature throughout history is fundamental to the understanding of the principles of sustainable development. The methodologies of environmental assessment of buildings appeared as a reply to the Eco Rio 92 and most developed countries have their own system. The objective of the present work is to contribute to the development of a system of assessment and classification of the environmental performance of buildings considering the Brazilian reality, which can be applied in the design phase, and offering tools to support decision making toward the improvement of sustainability. A detailed analysis of the existing systems and the case studies conducted herein, show that (1) it is possible to identify a common elements among the international systems, which allows the establishment of references for the development of one method more suitable to Brazil; (2) this Brazilian system must be simple, due to the current state of affairs in Brazil, and should be easily applicable by the professionals involved in the construction business, but should also help to detect the deficiencies and opportunities for the improvement of the environmental performance of buildings. The environmental assessment system proposed was constructed by selecting indicators of sustainability, from analysis of existing international systems, and by considering the national building codes related to the theme.
