Resumo: | This work seeks to study the relationship between strategies for sustainability and institutional results in Brazilian universities. The objective is to analyze the form and, to what degree, Brazilian universities insert sustainability in their teaching, research, extension and management strategies. Based on a mixed method approach, in which a quantitative step was carried out with 51 Brazilian universities and, afterwards, 4 interviews were conducted with managers at the qualitative stage, it was possible to analyze the phenomenon and to answer the problem of Research that is: To what degree the sustainability is present in the management of Brazilian universities? Other specific research objectives include: (i) to describe the strategies for sustainability adopted by universities; (ii) identify management processes of sustainability in universities; (iii) identify the motivating factors for the adoption of sustainability in universities; (iv) identify the inhibitory factors for the adoption of sustainability in universities; (v) to verify the relationship between actions for sustainability and institutional results in universities. Among the hypotheses confirmed positively regarding the insertion of sustainability into university strategies are the relationship between managers' beliefs and values and the planning and actions for sustainability in university strategy; the profile of the graduate required by the labor market and the adoption of strategies for sustainability; the existence of an exclusive structure for the management of sustainability actions and results in the social, environmental and economic dimensions; sustainability expressed in the university's mission / vision statements and results and the use of sustainability control / evaluation methodology and results in universities. Among the main factors inhibiting the insertion of sustainability in the strategies of Brazilian universities, according to university leaders, there is the unavailability of financial resources for the implementation of actions, the lack of people in the institution's staff with knowledge and competence to manage actions for sustainability and the lack of funding for research and extension projects focused on sustainable issues. |
