Resumo: | Mellitus Type 1 Diabetes is a chronicle disease which affects hundreds of people all over the world, especially youngsters and children. The presence of a child with a chronicle disease in a family deserves an especial attention. The aim of the present work is to analyze the life experience of families that have children with Mellitus Type 1 Diabetes. A qualitative research approach was selected, with multiple subjects as characteristic of case studies. Theories on familiar nursing and health promotion gave support to the data analysis. Four families that have children with type 1 diabetes were studied, which totalized seven participants. The data were collected through deep interviews, genogram construction and ecomap. For the data analysis, we used the content analysis, in a thematic model. The results presented the families characterization and the testimonies grouped in the following categories: support, social webs and familiar roles. The kinds of support found in the testimonies were: emotional, informational, instrumental and reinforcement supports. The relatives, especially the grandmothers, were mentioned as support resources. The information about the disease was relevant to provide for care. Faith and religion also helped to face difficulties. Material resources were obtained from lots of sources. The social webs, institutions and structures connected to the family were: school, support groups, municipal, state and federal organs. We concluded that it is important to identify the position of each member in the family structure and the support sources so as to plan an ideal care destined to health promotion.
