Resumo: | The city should be a stage for human interaction, meeting place, information exchange, culture, and leisure. It should be a tool for Health Promotion in creating a favorable environment for people to live healthy lives. This paper is a cross-sectional, exploratory and qualitative study, with the objective of analyzing the environmental disturbances in the urban area, in order to understand the relationship between people and city, identifying in the urban space the use of green areas and those dedicated to leisure; checking the conditions of urban mobility, accessibility and; detecting garbage accumulation or handling. The environmental disturbances in the urban area were captured by photographic images taken in the first trimester of 2019 in a city in the interior of São Paulo. The clippings of places and situations in the city were limited to a certain frame chosen, defined and or observed by those who photographed it. This empirical material was analyzed and discussed with Health Promotion reference material and the references of Jan Gehl. The use of green and leisure areas seems to be very restricted in view of their conditions, whether due to their lack, bad conditions or bad locations, negatively influencing the use culture of these spaces. Focusing on people, pedestrians, cyclists, and wheelchair users, the city, at least in these clippings, was uninviting for walking and commuting. Garbage in public spaces, for example, belongs to everyone and this needs to be discussed collectively. The fact that trash can contaminate water or lead to floods is important, but it also affects the safe walking of pedestrians along sidewalks. It was evident that in the city everything can be connected. Fairer spaces will be positive for the whole society. Giving people the opportunity to choose how comfortable and pleasant to get around, and being able to do so independently, could make the relationship between people and city more friendly. Cities need to be for/of people. Made by them, for them. The present paper subsidizes elements to encourage collective debate and new research on the relationship between people and city, allowing reflection in what matter and how the environment in which people live can contribute to their empowerment to be coresponsible in the process of planning, execution, and evaluation of the actions of your city. Finally, the city studied reveal itself to be much more used as a transitional place than a place to be, and the green spaces and leisure without function reinforce this perception captured by the photographs.
