Resumo: Mikania glomerata belongs to Asteraceae family, in Brazil is commonly named as ―Guaco‖. This plant can be chemically characterized by the presence of several kauran diterpenes in your composition, and ent-kaurenoic acid has been pointed out as its major constituent. Ent-caurenoic enriched Mikania glomerate extract (standardized extract) presented MIC values between 6.25 and 12.50 μg/mL and its main metabolite (ent-kaurenoic acid) showed MIC values between 6.25 and 50.00 μg/mL. Standardized extract and ent-kaurenoic acid required 6 hours to exert their bactericidal effect. The results describe here in denote the potential of Mikania glomerata as a source of new anticareogenic active principles. This work also describes development and validation of analytical method by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC-DAD) to determine ent-kaurenoic acid content in standardized extract. Analytical studies allowed establish a reliable method to determine ent-kaurenoic acid content in standardized extract, meeting increasing demands for quality and safety in plant derived products. In addition, cytotoxicity and genotoxicity assays stated the safety standardized extract use. Finally, it is also described the use of experimental design to obtain extracts of Mikania glomerata without the utilization of chromatographic steps.
