Resumo: The Brazilian Federal Constitution of 1988 recognizes education as a social right, promoting the full development of the person, formation for citizenship and qualification for the world of work. However, the right to education, as well as the opportunity for access, permanence and success, are confronted with school dropout, which emerges as a serious problem in educational policies in Brazil, as it goes beyond the walls of educational institutions and causes social impacts and reduction in the most vulnerable segments that attend public schools. The concept of dropout is generically used from the perspective of the student's non-permanence in school. Thus, the study assumes that dropping out of school - a recurrent problem in the reality of Brazilian education - requires its confrontation in the field of public educational policies, through actions defined in official documents that guide the overcoming of this serious problem and are trained to ensure the permanence and success of students in the courses in which they are enrolled. This work investigates the institutional policies for the permanence and success of students at the Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology of São Paulo, with the intention of verifying if the actions registered in the normative scope of the Federal Institute of São Paulo that guide the overcoming of the problem of school dropout are having an effect in the reduction of the indexes, or not. Finally, contributions are presented with the aim of cooperating for the improvement of the IFSP's Permanence and Success Policies.
