Resumo: Human society has produced a number of ways of being part of the world out of natural environment (water, earth, air, fauna and flora). Ecotourism, perceived as a group of activities oriented to fulfil a variety of needs and desires, motivates individuals of this society (ecotourists) to move away from their day to day universe to these environments, turning to a possibility for them to be at the world in the natural environment. Ecotourism as an activity that at the same time intermediates organises and promotes natural resources as part of the tourism supply and the demands as the desires of these ecotourists; incites the acknowledgement that the environment is an undisputed condition for ecotourism existence and development. However, given the vulnerability of natural heritage, intensive use – by ecotourism as well, changes the environment irreversibly. It has been identified that ecotourism depends on natural resources protection and at the same time must be considered an alternative to socioeconomic development of the areas where such attractions are to be found. Starting out from a number of initiatives regarding certification in the tourism sector (tour operators) and through environmental management, twelve guidelines have been developed, categorised as a means competitive market participation of these enterprises. The establishment of guidelines must be developed focusing the tour operators‟ products - packages and tours from and to natural environments, considering the singularity of the sector‟s system towards certification. The managerial system guidelines include environmental policy, responsibility and resources, revision methods, follow up and constant improvement and are to be applied at tour operators administration as well as during planning, marketing and operation of ecotourism tours and packages. This work discussed the effectiveness of these guidelines, isolating and placing the tour operator products phases on which these guidelines may take place. The goal was to accomplish certification at low cost and permanently so that is could be become the best strategy, both in terms of indication and results, in order to allow Brazilian tour operators to match the worldwide top tour operators in terms of environmental management. This work concluded that, as there is no guidelines and pattern procedures that certify ecotourism tours planned, marketed and operated by ecotourism tour operators. Hence, it is necessary to create such guidelines. Therefore, their use by way of a green stamp, considers this “green identity” as a premise to rational land occupation, attractiveness and originality of natural heritage, as well as tourism services quality, all of them key points for sustainable tourism development.
