Resumo: | Traditionally, studies on strategic management has focused its attention on large companies, however, not all features and management models adopted for these organizations apply and provide effective results when it comes to small businesses. This is because the formation of strategies these organizations generally occurs in a different dynamics of large organizations due to specificities that influence the way in which strategies emerge and are developed in small businesses. The main objective of this study was to analyze how the process of strategy formation in small businesses. Therefore, we examined the presence, influence and dynamic elements of nature linear, Adaptive and Interpretative under Chaffee (1985) in the formation of strategies, noting how such elements characterize the different stages of this process, considered in this study as Decision, Objectives, Initiatives and Outcomes. In theoretical terms, this study was based on the theory of strategy in organizations, specifically about the process of strategy formation in small businesses, emphasizing three types of strategy called by Chaffee (1985) as Linear, Adaptive and Interpretative. This is a comparative case study of a qualitative nature, with cross-sectional analysis. The period of analysis included the years 2007 to 2012. Data were collected by means of documents, non-participant observation and semi-structured interviews applied to owners, managers and employees of three small businesses located in the metropolitan region of Curitiba. The data were analyzed using the technique of narrative analysis and document analysis. From the analysis, it was found that the process of formation of these strategies is characterized by predominantly model elements and Interpretation of Adaptive strategy in accordance Chaffee (1985). The elements that characterize these models show up more often in phases Decision, Objectives and Initiatives of this process. It was found that the observation of events, both environmental and internal, in addition to the interpretation of owners and managers underlie the decisions and adoption of initiatives in the organizations studied. Also been identified, although not significant, model characteristics Linear strategy, when they present the results found during that process. It was concluded that there is some regularity in the dynamics between the elements of nature adaptive, interpretive and linear phases of the process of strategy formation in the three companies analyzed. Finally, this study presents a model of the characteristics of the process of strategy formation in small businesses based on the proposal of Chaffee (1985). |
