However efficient a process may be, it will always output some kind of waste, which will require adequate treatment as not to pose any environmental risk. Financially-only driven businesses, usually doomed to a brief existence, fail in not duly assessing environmental, social, technical and legal issues, whose role is highly relevant as regards corporate sustainabilty. This dissertation presents the development of a methodology concerning the corporate management of waste in the electric power industry, encompassing the assessment of the waste internal cycle, waste composition and classification, and its possible negative environment impacts. For the purpose of this study, Cleaner Production principles, Ecoefficiency and specific legislation on the matter are taken into account. The application of mean analyses of technological options to treat and correctly dispose of each type of waste do involve social, envinronmental, technical, economical and legal aspects. In the end, the appropriate options are prioritized, supplying parameters for the managers’ decision making process. The results obtained in the validation of the methodology, carried out by specialized technicians, attest its usefulness and effectiveness.
