Resumo: Densely urbanized areas tend to enhance problems caused by the lack of conservation of water resources. Higher volume of effluent disposal, expansion of impermeable surfaces and reduction of water availability are typical examples of impacts caused by population growth in urban areas. Part of these consequences are due to public policies and territorial management practices not integrated at various spheres. This study aimed at providing a basis for better integrating water management with land use management in urban areas, with a view to implementing public policies that minimize impacts on water resources in urban areas and promote sustainable development. To achieve this, a broad and in-depth literature review was carried out to identify principles and criteria for analyzing the integration of the two management perspectives. A diagnosis of key federal laws and management instruments in force in the city of Curitiba was then undertaken. A number of propositions are put forward, which were identified in the technical and scientific literature for their potential to fill such gaps, as examples of good practice in integrated management that are more comprehensive than those currently in use in the Curitiba region, and may be applicable in other urban areas.
