Resumo: The objective of this dissertation is to understand how the process of ’sustainability’ sensemaking works, and the meaning of sustainability by the actors of a civil construction organization. The present work is theoretically justified for presenting the sensemaking of sustainability of a civil construction organization due to the fact that national researches with this focus were not identified. As a practical reason, this paper highlights the sustainability discourse made and remade within the organization and to its stakeholders, which can be understood as a strategical resource or substantially rhetorical. One of the bases of this research is founded on the constructivist approach sociology of the knowledge and the other basis, of the interpretive nature, is related to the process of sensemaking. The study design was a qualitative approach, the temporality was sectional with a longitudinal perspective, to enable the historical and retrospective recovery of the phenomenon approached starting in 2006, when the organization began its participation in study in the BM&FBOVESPA market until the year 2015 when finished the data collection. For qualitative analysis of empirical data from 12 interviews, It was used the analysis method of the full content of the transcripts. The data analysis highlighted that the organizational actors built sense considering the previous experience and a lack of conformity about the meaning given to the term “sustainability” happened. Another shown aspect was related through the dynamics of processes of sensemaking and sensegiving. This process of influence in the sensemaking was observed through some of the organization’s strategical actors’ speech. The data analysis also showed that the way that the interviewed people built meaning differ among itself. This way, it was possible to notice two groups: (i) the first one is related to the ones that build meaning in a clear way and repel ambiguity and are visibly the most involved in their activities, as well as committed to the organization; and (ii) the second, which refers to the ones that build meaning in a non-clear way and, because of that, more difficultly happens the sensemaking, with major notice of ambiguity in this process. Through this study it was shown that in this moment the organization shows difficulty in joining discourse and action to the sustainability aspects. The major conclusion of this research was to notice that the process of sensemaking happened and happens in the organization mentioned due to the fact that the social actors are related to the processes in the pace that they influence them and are, by them, influenced. Because of the observed relation in this research between sensemaking and sensegiving, it is suggested future studies to understand how the relations between “power” and “hierarchy” interfere in this process dynamics.
