Resumo: |
This research focuses on the contemporary practice of letterpress printing in Brazilian graphic design. Regarded as commercially obsolete technology, letterpress is rescued by a significant number of designers during the 1990s. They use it as a distinctive aspect of their projects. This thesis means to investigate the key aspects of this work, its several manifestations and relevance regarding the contemporary Brazilian graphic design. As an exploratory and qualitative research, it was necessary to make use of different methodological procedures to reach its conclusion. Oral history was the main method for collecting and analyzing data. Of all 13 printing groups identified throughout the country, eight were interviewed, which enabled a broad understanding of the phenomenon, and the identification of relevant topics. More than a romantic revival, it was realized in this practice a resonance with another contemporaneous manifestations of graphic design, once the phenomenon relies upon a pluralistic strategy where different issues and aspects are combined reinventing letterpress printing. |
