This etnographic research had the objective of trying to understand the role played by food in the Divino Espírito Santo festival in São Luis do Paraitinga, state of São Paulo (Brazil), based on its 2015 and 2016 editions. It is grounded in theoretical aspects of hospitality and commensality, and of the relationship between popular festivals, hospitality, and tourism, with emphasis on the role of food in religious festivals, such as the Divino festival, which takes places in several regions of Brazil. The empirical data was collected through active observation, documents consultation, and open interviews during the editions considered. Based on the characters and spaces, made festive, hospitality manifestations mediated by food were identified, both in the esmolar (festival preparation) and in the Pentecostes (festival realization). The hospitable attitude is seen as a moral obligation, a gift to be offered and rewarded by the blessings given by the Holy Spirit. Keywords: |
