Resumo: Introduction: Obesity is defined as the accumulation of excessive fat in adipose tissue that leads to a low grade systemic inflammation, which in turn seems to be associated with neuroinflammation culminating in neuronal damage. Thus, due to the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties of artichoke, this may be an alternative in the treatment of obesity. Objective: To evaluate the effect of artichoke extract administration on neuroinflammatory and neurochemical parameters. Methods: Eighty male 40-day-old Swiss mice were used. Initially the animals were weighed and matched in two groups of equal numbers: normolipid diet (control group) and hyperlipid diet (obese group). The mice were kept on this regimen for 10 weeks and weighed weekly. After 6 weeks of dietary protocol, mice were matched in groups for treatment with 1.6g / kg artichoke extract in the following regimens, where they were maintained for 4 weeks: Normolipid diet + saline; Normolipid diet + artichoke extract; Hyperlipid diet + saline and Hyperlipid diet + artichoke extract. After the animals' death, the visceral fat weight, inflammatory parameters and oxidative stress in the mice brain were evaluated. Results: Treatment with artichoke extract had no effect on body weight, but reduced visceral fat. Obese animals showed increased inflammation and oxidative damage, as well as increased activity of antioxidant enzymes in brain structures. Artichoke extract treatment partially reversed changes in inflammatory and oxidative damage parameters and attenuated changes in antioxidant defense. Artichoke extract had a beneficial effect on the brain of obese animals as it partially reversed the changes caused by eating a high fat diet and consequent obesity. Conclusion: Our results support studies indicating that artichoke extract may contribute to the treatment of obesity
