Streszczenie: | The present research analyses the representation of the following feminine characters, Adelaide, D. Leonor, Tanaia and Carmosina, from, respectively, the novels Os ratos (1935), O estadista (1995), Endiabrados (1980) e Nuanças (1981), by Dyonelio Machado. To achieve that objective, the characteristics and behavior of the mentioned characters are examined considering the cultural circumstances they are subjected to, in a society still bearing the marks of patriarchal past, as the one presented in the fictional reality studied. The essays by Antonio Candido and Anatol Rosenfeld, from the book A personagem de ficção (The character in fiction) are theoretical references for the research, for studying the nature of fictional beings. Besides, in order to fundament the story of women in Brazil, during the period from 1920 to 1940, the researches by Mary Del Priore, in História das mulheres no Brasil; and Michelle Perrot in the following books História da vida privada, and Os excluídos da história: operários, mulheres e prisioneiros, are taken as references.
