Shrnutí: | The present research analyses the representation of the following feminine characters, Adelaide, D. Leonor, Tanaia and Carmosina, from, respectively, the novels Os ratos (1935), O estadista (1995), Endiabrados (1980) e Nuanças (1981), by Dyonelio Machado. To achieve that objective, the characteristics and behavior of the mentioned characters are examined considering the cultural circumstances they are subjected to, in a society still bearing the marks of patriarchal past, as the one presented in the fictional reality studied. The essays by Antonio Candido and Anatol Rosenfeld, from the book A personagem de ficção (The character in fiction) are theoretical references for the research, for studying the nature of fictional beings. Besides, in order to fundament the story of women in Brazil, during the period from 1920 to 1940, the researches by Mary Del Priore, in História das mulheres no Brasil; and Michelle Perrot in the following books História da vida privada, and Os excluídos da história: operários, mulheres e prisioneiros, are taken as references. Leonor, Tanaia e Carmosina, que fazem parte, respectivamente, das obras Os ratos (1935), O estadista (1995), Endiabrados (1980) e Nuanças (1981), do autor Dyonelio Machado. Para tanto, examinam-se as características e o comportamento das personagens mencionadas diante do condicionamento cultural a que estão sujeitas numa sociedade ainda marcada por um passado patriarcal, como o da realidade ficcional em foco. Servem de referencial teórico para a pesquisa os ensaios de Antonio Candido e Anatol Rosenfeld incluídos na obra A personagem de ficção, os quais tratam da natureza dos seres ficcionais. Além disso, para fundamentar a história das mulheres no Brasil, no período que vai de 1920 a 1940, tomam-se como referência os estudos das historiadoras Mary Del Priore, na obra História das mulheres no Brasil, e de Michelle Perrot, nas obras História da vida privada e Os excluídos da história: operários, mulheres e prisioneiros.
