Streszczenie: | This thesis is the result of historical research on the identity representations and cultural heritage of Polish immigrants in the Missões region of Rio Grande do Sul, particularly in the municipality of Guarani das Missões. It addresses the identification of the local residents with the Missioneira region through a study that examines the strategies for building and maintaining identity among Polish immigrants and their descendants from the emancipation of the municipality to the present day. The objectives are to understand the arrival of these immigrants, their settlement in the region, the development leading to the municipality's emancipation, and to analyze their local heritage, festivities, religious manifestations, the teaching of the Polish language, the creation of laws to promote Polish culture, as well as the media and advertising produced or appropriated by the community. Since its establishment as a colony belonging to the municipality of São Luiz Gonzaga, Guarani das Missões has welcomed immigrants from Sweden, Russia, Austria, Germany, Italy, Poland, among others. However, over the decades, Polish descendants have become the largest group, thereby imprinting their cultural origins, traditions, and religiosity on the local identity. Nevertheless, the name of the municipality, which references the native groups that lived and still live in the region, remains a marker of the complex identity amalgamations of the space. The locality emancipated in 1959 and, since then, has developed based on many aspects of Polish culture, through cultural manifestations, the founding of associations, the promotion of festivals, and the exaltation of religiosity. The research is justified by the analysis of identity in its political dimension, complicating its evidence as a social phenomenon, paying attention to how the community recognizes itself in relation to the region in which it lives. The methodological approach consists of a literature review to understand the concepts of Identity, Heritage, Representation, and the history of immigration and the formation of the municipality, which are necessary for the study. We rely on authors who address these themes, such as Candau (2011), Bhabha (1998), Escosteguy (2010), Hall (2006, 2016), Chartier (1991, 2002), and Bourdieu (2007). Additionally, other sources utilized include local newspapers, documents from existing institutions in the municipality, municipal and state laws, and the observation of photographs. The results revealed that the predominant identity among the residents is strongly related to Polish immigration, considering historical and cultural aspects related to the 9 country of origin, Poland, in contrast to the aspects that establish a link to the regional missionary context, given that the municipality of Guarani das Missões is located in the northwest region of Rio Grande do Sul. |
