Summary: | Goal: to describe strength training methods, indicate their efficiency by presenting the types of stimuli that they cause to the musculoskeletal system and to point the most efficient methods. Methods: scientific articles and books in Portuguese and English found in Scholar Google Website, Scielo and Pubmed were used in this survey. The material used was published from the years 2001 to 2025. Scientific articles and books in other idioms were not considered on this survey. Nor were used monographies and graduation and lato sensu post-graduation course conclusion papers. Outcomes and discussion: Almost 60 strength training methods were found, which are capable to produce beneficial and differentiated stimuli to the musculoskeletal system, meanwhile they promote muscle hypertrophy, body fat reduction, LME, physical conditioning, maximal strength, and rehabilitation of muscle lesions. Conclusion: The great majority of the methods promote muscle hypertrophy and body fat reduction. However, many methods present maximal strength promotion. Some excel physical conditioning and muscular endurance. Only one method showed capability to promote rehabilitation of muscle lesions. Methods related to the manipulation of variables connected to intensity showed up superior and more efficient. |
