With the increase in wood consumption by society, it was necessary to search for alternative methods and materials to fulfill this demand. A good alternative are materials of plant origin that can replace this raw material. In this context, inserts the bamboo, with properties like for example strength and stiffness outperform wood and concrete, being compared even with the steel. In Brazil it is a material rarely used but it has several advantages such as light weight, strength, versatility, rapid growth besides excellent physical and chemical properties. The main species of bamboo that can be used in construction were identified and characterized by bibliographic research. The various uses of bamboo in this area, such as using plaque type OSB (Oriented Strandboard), glued laminated bamboo, bamboo hydraulic piping and concrete reinforcement were also reported. Most had good results proving that bamboo is an excellent material that can be applied in various ways in construction.
