Summary: The purpose of this paper is a mythological analysis of the symbols presented in the North-American novel Moby Dick or The Whale (1851), by Herman Melville, mainly those symbols that highlight the relation between Captain Ahab and Moby Dick. Before the analysis itself, it is intended to explore the novel through a historical approach starting from the disaster that happened in 1821 with the whaleship Essex. This fact was caused by the attack of a sperm whale, and it is related in the novel In the Heart of the Sea (2000), by Nathaniel Philbrick. The attack was an inspiration for Melville to write his masterwork. This study covers the fields of Sociology, History and Symbolism, so, as theoretical contribution it will be used, mainly, the works by Candido (2000), Eagleton (2006), Parker (2008) and Campbell (1990), as well as the interpretations of symbols of Chevalier and Gheebrant (1999).

Antes da análise em si, pretende-se explorar o romance sob uma perspectiva histórica a partir do desastre que aconteceu em 1821 com o navio baleeiro Essex. Tal fato foi causado pelo ataque de uma baleia cachalote, relatado na obra No Coração do Mar (2000), de Nathaniel Pilbrick. Esse ataque serviu de inspiração para Melville escrever sua obra-prima.
