The optimization of production processes with reduction of waste and increase in productivity is the focus of automotive assembly lines. The assembly line balancing problem has the reduction of the line cycle time as one of the main objectives, enabling decreases in production costs and increase in productivity through balancing processing times across workstations. In this report, the conditions and characteristics of a final part assembly line of diesel engines was analyzed. The precedence relations of performed tasks was identified. In addition, by the computational solution of a mathematical model in Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP), the possibility of optimizing the line was verified, decreasing the cycle time. The study was applied for the two most produced engines in factory; it was observed a balancing in workstations productive times and better assembly line indicators, making possible to achieve the desired cost reduction in the engine production.
