Morphological Awareness: An Overview of Scientific Prodution in Alphabetic Languages

Summary: This study aimed to review the scientific production nationally and internationally indexed in Scielo, Pepsic, and Capes journal (Web of science, and Eric Psychinfo), between 1999 and 2009, on the relationship between morphological awareness and literacy. Empirical studies that described the relationship of morphological awareness and literacy were selected. Seventy‑six papers were identified. They were analyzed considering the following aspects: the age of the samples of interest, the countries where the publication were more frequent, the years of publication and the most frequent keywords. Papers that were excluded were literature review, papers dealing with the syntactic awareness without focusing on morphosyntactic or derivational morphology, papers with bilingual subjects, and book chapters. The results point to the need for more publications on the subject, and they show that this is a relatively new theme and many issues still need to be addressed.

The results point to the need for more publications on the subject, and they show that this is a relatively new theme and many issues still need to be addressed.Este trabajo ha tenido como objetivo revisar la producción científica nacional e internacional indexada en el Scielo, Pepsic, y Capes periódicos (Web de la ciencia, de Psychinfo y de Eric) del año 1999 hasta el año 2009 en lo relacionado a estudios que asocian conciencia morfológica y alfabetización. Fueron seleccionados estudios empíricos que relacionaron la conciencia morfológica a la alfabetización. Fueron identificados 76 considerando los aspectos siguientes: la edad de las muestras de interés, los países donde el tema es más frecuente, los años de la publicación y las palabras claves. Se excluyeron los artículos de la revisión de literatura, artículos que se ocuparon de la conciencia sintáctica sin centrarse en los aspectos de los morfosintácticos o morfología derivacional y bilingüe, así como los capítulos de libros. Los resultados señalan que es necesario más publicaciones sobre el tema por ser relativamente nuevo y con muchas preguntas que todavía deberán ser trabajadas.Este trabalho teve como objetivo revisar a produção cientifica nacional e internacional indexada no Scielo, Pepsic, e no periódico CAPES (Web of science, Psychinfo e Eric) entre 1999 e 2009 sobre a relação entre consciência morfológica e alfabetização. Foram selecionados estudos empíricos que descreviam o relacionamento da consciência morfológica e a alfabetização. Identificaram-se 76 que foram analisados considerando os seguintes aspectos: a faixa etária de interesse das amostras, os países onde a publicação do tema é mais freqüente, os anos de publicação, os países onde o tema é mais freqüente e as palavras chaves mais encontradas. Foram excluídos artigos de revisão da literatura, artigos que tratavam da consciência sintática sem focar nos aspectos morfossintáticos ou da morfologia derivacional e bilíngüe e capítulos de livros.
