Summary: The present study investigates the education according to Paulo Freire in the binomial education and participation, as well as education and liberation from his publications Education, The Practice of Freedom, Pedagogy of the Oppressed and Conscientization: Theory and Practice of Liberation, foundations of his thinking, also taking into account studies about his work and other of his writings. Illiteracy challenges him to seek a new pedagogy, beyond traditional prescriptions. He paves the way for education both as a practice of freedom and as a liberating action. The central axis of his conceptions, conscientization appears, in turn, as a praxis, a process of action and reflection of women and men in history, implying the awakening of their critical awareness, in their human affirmation as subjects committed to the transformation of this same history.

El analfabetismo le desafía a buscar una nueva pedagogía, en medio de recetas tradicionales. Él abre caminos para la educación como práctica de la libertad y como acción liberadora. Eje central de sus concepciones, la concientización se presenta a su vez como praxis, proceso de acción y reflexión de la mujer y del hombre en la historia, en el despertar de su conciencia crítica, en la afirmación humana como sujetos comprometidos con la transformación de esta misma historia.O presente estudo investiga a educação segundo Paulo Freire no binômio educação e participação, bem como educação e libertação, a partir das suas publicações Educação como prática da liberdade, Pedagogia do Oprimido e Conscientização: Teoria e prática da libertação, alicerces de seu pensamento, igualmente tendo em conta estudos sobre a sua obra e outros escritos seus.
