The connection between precariousness of work and the mental health of workers

The aim of this paper was to perform an integrative review of the literature concerning precariousness of work and its possible correlations and effects on the mental health of workers. Thus, a research was carried out on the BVS, SciElo and Periodicos Capes engines between December 2022 and March 2023, using the following descriptors: precariousness of work and mental health of workers. Through the results 45 papers were analyzed, which identified certain aspects that promote the precarization of work, such as: financial crisis, the new work structure, the ascencion of the neoliberal ideology, and the recent sanitary crisis caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. Within this scenario, the context of how the precariousness of work affected healthcare and education workers as well as other professional categories was addressed. The findings showed that precariousness of work can have negative effects on work relations due to physical and mental fatigue. These effects, in turn, can result in lower productivity, absenteeism, and sick leave. Although a connection between the precariousness of work and the mental health of workers has been found, further research is required to better illustrate a causal relationship between precariousness of work and the mental health of workers.
