The training of the beginner reader: a reflection about the whole and the parts in the literacy process

This paper proposes a reflection on the training of the beginner reader, that is, the one who initiates his contact with reading and writing, in the literacy period. In order to do so, it aims to explain theoretical issues hardly explored in the literacy training, as well as point out ways to change the national scenario of low reading rates. The article explores the cognitive aspect of reading, focusing on the stages prior to the grapheme-phonemic correspondence, specifically about the recognition of letters and the necessary process of dissimetrization for reading (neuronal recycling), emphasizes the importance of the phonological path of reading during the literacy process, which presents the different correspondences between graphemes and phonemes present in the Brazilian Portuguese (PB) system, and emphasizes the essential development of phonemic awareness as a way to minimize the problems of literacy that extend throughout the training of the reader in later grades of Basic Education.
