Summary: The aim of this article is to analyse how slave slavery was at the service of environmental devastation in the Recôncavo Baiano during the colonial period. This is a little known pair, although widely commented by many, but in a separate way. This text aims to fill a bibliographical gap by working on two concepts dear to Brazilian society: the problem of slavery and that of environmental devastation in the Recôncavo Baiano region. For this reason the present text is divided into two parts: in the first, the slave trade and its initial purpose will be examined; in the second, it will be scrutinized how the environmental devastation was carried out by the blacks, at the behest of their masters, in order to supply the export market for wood, above all, leaving indelible consequences for the region to this day. It is hoped that the text may contribute to the advancement of interdisciplinary studies on environmental history in Brazil.

Se trata de un binomio poco conocido, aunque ampliamente comentado por muchos, pero de forma separada. Este texto pretende llenar un vacío bibliográfico trabajando dos conceptos caros a la sociedad brasileña: el problema de la esclavitud y el de la devastación ambiental en la región del Recôncavo Baiano. Por esta razón, el presente texto se divide en dos partes: en la primera, se examinará la trata de esclavos y su finalidad inicial; en la segunda, se escudriñará cómo la devastación ambiental fue llevada a cabo por los negros, a instancias de sus amos, con el fin de abastecer el mercado de exportación de madera, sobre todo, dejando consecuencias indelebles para la región hasta nuestros días. Se espera que el texto pueda contribuir al avance de los estudios interdisciplinarios sobre la historia ambiental en Brasil.O objetivo deste artigo é analisar como a escravidão negreira esteve a serviço da devastação ambiental no Recôncavo Baiano durante o período colonial. Trata-se de um par pouco conhecido, embora largamente comentado por muitos, mas de forma separada. Este texto visa a preencher uma lacuna bibliográfica ao trabalhar dois conceitos caros à sociedade brasileira: o problema da escravidão e o da devastação ambiental na região do Recôncavo Baiano. Por essa razão o presente texto está dividido em duas partes: na primeira, será examinado o comércio dos escravos e sua finalidade inicial; na segunda, será perscrutado como a devastação ambiental foi executada pelos negros, a mando de seus senhores, a fim de suprir o mercado exportador de madeiras, sobretudo, deixando consequências indeléveis para a região até os dias de hoje.
