Teaching approaches to drugs in the context of the socio-educational system: an analysis about the lar do garoto

Summary: This article is an excerpt from the master's thesis defended in the Postgraduate Program in Education at the Federal University of Paraíba (UFPB), whose research was developed in the Socio-Educational Center Lar do Garoto, an educational establishment located in the municipality of Lagoa Seca, state of Paraíba, where adolescents who committed infractional acts are in execution of a socio-educational measure of internment. The study was approved by the Human Research Ethics Committee of the Medical Sciences Center of UFPB under opinion nº 5.255.702, on February 22, 2022. In the investigation, we aimed to analyze how the issue of drugs has been addressed in the school context of adolescents who are at Lar do Garoto. Methodologically, the research was operationalized through semi-structured interviews with teachers from the school operating in the socio-educational unit. The empirical material resulting from the interviews was scrutinized according to the procedures of the Thematic Analysis by Braun and Clarke (2006). Among the results, we observed different approaches of drugs, both guided by the prohibitionist logic of the “war on drugs”, and by approaches that reject it. Conclusively, it is emphasised the need to offer continuing formation to the socio-educational teachers about drugs, considering the challenges inherent to the theme and the context of adolescents assisted by the socio-educational system.

Este artículo es un extracto de la tesis de maestría defendida en el Programa de Posgrado en Educación de la Universidad Federal de Paraíba (UFPB), cuya investigación fue realizada en el Centro Socioeducativo Lar do Garoto, un establecimiento educativo ubicado en el municipio de Lagoa Seca, estado de Paraíba, donde los adolescentes que delinquen cumplen una medida socioeducativa de internamiento. El estudio fue aprobado por el Comité de Ética en Investigación Humana del Centro de Ciencias Médicas de UFPB bajo el dictamen nº 5.255.702, en 22 de febrero de 2022. En la investigación, tuvimos como objetivo analizar cómo la cuestión de las drogas ha sido abordada en el contexto escolar de los adolescentes que se encuentran en Lar do Garoto. Metodológicamente, la investigación fue operativizada por medio de entrevistas semiestructuradas a docentes de la escuela que funciona en la propia unidad socioeducativa. El material empírico resultante de las entrevistas fue escudriñado según los procedimientos del Análisis Temático de Braun y Clarke (2006). Entre los resultados, visualizamos diferentes enfoques de las drogas, tanto guiados por la lógica prohibicionista de la “guerra contra las drogas”, como por enfoques que la rechazan. A modo de conclusión, se apunta la necesidad de ofrecer formación permanente a los docentes de socioeducación en materia de drogas, teniendo en cuenta los desafíos inherentes a la temática y el contexto de los adolescentes atendidos por el sistema socioeducativo. Este artigo é um recorte de uma dissertação de mestrado defendida no Programa de Pós-Graduação em Educação da Universidade Federal da Paraíba (UFPB), cuja pesquisa foi realizada no Centro Socioeducativo Lar do Garoto, um estabelecimento localizado no município de Lagoa Seca, estado da Paraíba, onde adolescentes autores de atos infracionais cumprem medida socioeducativa de internação. O estudo foi aprovado pelo Comitê de Ética em Pesquisa com Seres Humanos do Centro de Ciências Médicas da UFPB sob o parecer nº 5.255.702, em 22 de fevereiro de 2022. Na investigação, objetivamos analisar como a questão das drogas tem sido abordada no contexto escolar dos adolescentes que se encontram no Lar do Garoto. Metodologicamente, a pesquisa foi operacionalizada por entrevistas semiestruturadas com professores da escola em funcionamento na própria unidade socioeducativa. O material empírico resultante das entrevistas foi escrutinado conforme os procedimentos da Análise Temática de Braun e Clarke (2006). Dentre os resultados, vislumbramos diferentes abordagens sobre drogas, tanto orientadas pela lógica proibicionista da ‘guerra às drogas’, como por enfoques que a rejeitam. Conclusivamente, assinala-se a necessidade do oferecimento de formação continuada aos professores da socioeducação a respeito das drogas, tendo em conta os desafios inerentes ao tema e ao contexto dos adolescentes atendidos pelo sistema socioeducativo.
