Profile of hemodialysis patients in the Brusque Region, State of Santa Catarina (SC), Brazil

Summary: Introduction: Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is a multifactorial pathology. Depending on its severity, treatment consists of dialysis, with hemodialysis being the most used method in Brazil. The objective of this study was to develop a profile of hemodialysis patients in the region of Brusque, Santa Catarina, Brazil, addressing aspects of general, socioeconomic data, treatments, lifestyle, quality of life, level of satisfaction with the service, and an approach to spirituality. Method: This study is descriptive, cross-sectional, with a qualitative and quantitative approach, carried out at the Hemodialysis Center in the Brusque region. Data collection was conducted using a structured questionnaire, divided into six blocks based on the guidelines of Toassi & Petry (2021). The data were tabulated and organized in Microsoft Excel 2019 software, through simple descriptive analysis, following the recommendations of the aforementioned authors. Results: Encompassing 75%, it revealed a diverse patient profile. In summary, the majority of participants were between 51 and 72 years old, predominantly residents of Brusque, male, married, with low education, who consider themselves religious and have a monthly income of up to 2,000 reais. Regarding the evaluation of the service, the results were positive, with emphasis on the good relationship between patients and doctors and nurses. Regarding religious beliefs, the results show that this plays a significant role in the patient's life and is a source of emotional support. Conclusions: Understanding this diverse profile is essential to improve quality of life, adherence, and clinical results of treatment

Dependiendo de su gravedad, el tratamiento consiste en diálisis, siendo la hemodiálisis el método más utilizado en Brasil. El objetivo de este estudio fue desarrollar un perfil de pacientes de hemodiálisis en la región de Brusque, Santa Catarina, Brasil, abordando aspectos generales, datos socioeconómicos, tratamientos, estilo y calidad de vida, nivel de satisfacción con el servicio y enfoque en la espiritualidad. Método: Este estudio es descriptivo, transversal, con enfoque cualitativo y cuantitativo, realizado en el Centro de Hemodiálisis de la región Brusque. La recogida de datos se realizó mediante un cuestionario estructurado, con preguntas abiertas y cerradas, dividido en seis bloques siguiendo las directrices de Toassi & Petry (2021). Los datos fueron tabulados y organizados en el software Microsoft Excel 2019 y se realizó un análisis descriptivo simple, siguiendo las recomendaciones de los autores antes mencionados. Resultados: Con una cobertura del 75%, reveló un perfil diverso de pacientes en hemodiálisis en la región de Brusque. En resumen, la mayoría de los participantes tienen entre 51 y 72 años, predominantemente residentes en Brusque, hombres, casados, con baja escolaridad, que se consideran religiosos y tienen ingresos mensuales de hasta 2.000 reales. Al evaluar el servicio, los resultados fueron positivos, destacándose la buena relación entre pacientes, médicos y enfermeras. En cuanto a las creencias religiosas, los resultados muestran que ésta juega un papel importante en la vida del paciente y es una fuente de apoyo emocional. Quanto à avaliação do serviço os resultados foram positivos, com destaque a boa relação dos pacientes com médicos e enfermeiros. Sobre as crenças religiosas, os resultados mostram que essa desempenha um papel significativo na vida do paciente e é fonte de suporte emocional.
