Summary: The main objective of this essay is to honor – albeit briefly and belatedly – the economist and writer Celso Furtado. To this end, a gathering of his biography and performance in the Superintendence of Development of the Northeast (SUDENE) was made. Based on these points, information was selected on his personal background and social concern, which is believed to be revealed in the presence of the aforementioned state agency, in other actions, and also in much of his production. In addition, it was intended to recall the main events that marked the honoree’s trajectory. It is hoped, thus, that Furtado's history will help to identify his role in the national debate that led to the inclusion of the theme of poverty and development in the governance agenda, from the year 1950 onwards.

Para ello, se hizo un repaso de su biografía y desempeño en la Superintendencia de Desarrollo del Nordeste (SUDENE). A partir de estos puntos se seleccionó información sobre su trayectoria personal y preocupación social que se cree ver revelada en su presencia en ese organismo estatal, en otras acciones y también en gran parte de su producción. Además, se pretendía recordar los principales hechos que marcaron la trayectoria del homenajeado. Se espera, por lo tanto, que la historia de Furtado ayude a identificar su papel en el debate nacional que llevó a la inclusión del tema de la pobreza y del desarrollo en la agenda de la gobernabilidad, a partir del año 1950 en adelante.O objetivo principal deste ensaio foi homenagear – ainda que de forma breve e tardia – o economista e escritor Celso Furtado. Para isso, se fez um apanhado de sua biografia e atuação na Superintendência de Desenvolvimento do Nordeste (SUDENE). A partir desses pontos, foram selecionadas informações sobre sua formação pessoal e preocupação social que se acredita ver revelada na presença de tal órgão estatal, em outras ações e também muito de sua produção. Além disso, se pretendeu rememorar os principais eventos que marcaram a trajetória do homenageado.
