The Use of GIS in Financing: Analysis of European Projects

Summary: Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are essential for integrating and analyzing geospatial data. This study examines projects funded by the European Commission that utilize these technologies between 2014 and 2027. Data collection was conducted using the Community Research and Development Information Service (CORDIS), a database providing access to information on projects funded by the European Commission's research and innovation programs. Projects from Horizon 2020 (2014-2020) and Horizon Europe (2021-2027) were gathered. A total of 232 projects addressing relevant topics were identified. Indicators were established for analysis, including the evolution of the number of projects over the years, participation by country, collaboration between institutions, and thematic areas. The results show an irregular growth in the number of projects. The countries with the highest participation in the projects are Italy (103 projects), Spain (96 projects), and the United Kingdom (86 projects). The roles of institutions within the projects vary, including coordination, participation, partnerships, collaboration, and third parties. The institutions with the highest number of projects are Chancellor Masters and Scholars of the University of Cambridge (15 projects) and the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) (12 projects). The thematic analysis reveals that GIS is used in various fields, including Social Sciences and Humanities research. Documentary disciplines are not frequently present in the analyzed projects, which may represent an opportunity for future research.

Este estudio examina proyectos financiados por la Comisión Europea que emplean el uso de este tipo de tecnologías entre los años 2014 al 2027. Para la recopilación de los datos se empleó el Servicio de Información sobre Investigación y Desarrollo Comunitario (CORDIS), una base de datos que proporciona acceso a información sobre proyectos financiados por programas de investigación e innovación de la Comisión Europea. Se recopilaron proyectos correspondientes a Horizonte 2020 (2014-2020) y HORIZON EUROPE (2021-2027). Se identificaron 232 proyectos que abordan las temáticas de interés. Se establecieron indicadores para el análisis, incluyendo la evolución del número de proyectos a lo largo de los años, la participación por países, la colaboración entre instituciones y las áreas temáticas. Los resultados muestran un crecimiento irregular del número de proyectos. Los países que lideran con un mayor número de participación en los proyectos son Italia (103 proyectos), España (96 proyectos) y Reino Unido (86 proyectos). Los roles de las instituciones dentro de los proyectos varían asumiendo la coordinación, participación, socios, colaboración y terceras partes. Las instituciones con mayor número de proyectos son The Chancellor Masters and Scholars of the University of Cambridge (15 proyectos) y la Agencia Estatal Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas de España (12 proyectos). El análisis temático revela que los SIG se utilizan en diversas áreas, entre ellas investigaciones de Ciencias Sociales y Humanidades. Las disciplinas documentales no tienen una alta frecuencia de presencia en los proyectos analizados, lo que puede constituir una oportunidad para futuras investigaciones.Os Sistemas de Informação Geográfica (SIG) emergiram como ferramentas essenciais para integrar e analisar dados geoespaciais.
