Writing abstracts in graduate programs: a case study

Summary: This article reports the main findings of a master's thesis (COSTA, 2022) in Education that accompanied seven students of the Academic English I course for a semester to comprehend how they learned academic writing in English, more specifically the academic abstract. For that, we identified the rhetorical and linguistic structure that the participants used in the production of their abstracts according to the rhetorical movements of Swales and Feak (2009), we got to know their perspectives and the effects of instruction. We used to generate data: (a) participant observation; (b) field diary; (c) collection of produced abstracts; and (d) interviews with the graduate students. The data revealed the participants’ evolution in writing abstracts and the appropriation of Swales and Feak’s movements (2009). Participants highlighted the objective of publishing scientifically and internationally in English autonomously, as insiders through their active participation in specific contexts of language use.

Para tanto, identificamos a estrutura retórica e linguística que os participantes utilizaram na produção de seus abstracts de acordo com os movimentos retóricos de Swales e Feak (2009), conhecemos suas perspectivas e os efeitos da instrução. Utilizamos a geração de dados: (a) observação participante; (b) diário de campo; (c) coleta dos abstracts produzidos; e (d) entrevistas com os pós-graduandos. Os dados revelaram a evolução dos participantes na redação de abstracts e a apropriação dos movimentos de Swales e Feak (2009).
