The Surveillance of the National Information Service (SNI) : over the press in the State of Paraíba (1979-1984)

After the installation of the military dictatorship in Brazil, one of the first institutionalization measures of the new government was the creation of the National Information Service (SNI). This body was formally created by Decree-Law No. 4,341 of June 13, 1964 as an advisory body to the Executive, responsible not to the National Congress, but to the National Security Council and the President of the Republic. This body's first president was its creator, General Golbery do Couto e Silva. In 1970 the military government, with the aim of improving the information system, established the National Information System (SISNI). This became integrated by the National Information Service (SNI), the “Sectoral Information Systems of Civil Ministries”, the “Sectoral Information Systems of Military Ministries, the “Military Strategic Information Subsystem” (SUSIEM) and other sectoral bodies. What SISNI understood as “Other Sectoral Information Bodies” were information offices located in important spheres of public administration or in state-owned companies. This article makes use of the collection of the National Information Service (SNI), Agência Pernambuco, responsible for surveillance in the states of Alagoas, Paraíba, Pernambuco and Rio Grande do Norte. This article analyzes the production of information made or disseminated by the National Information Service (SNI) with the support of other information bodies of the Brazilian military dictatorship, about press activities in the state of Paraíba.   Keywords: Political History.
