Ethical discussions for an adequate understanding of science as an institution and citizen experience

Summary: | This article starts from the premise that it is the responsibility of the school to promote, through scientific education, conditions for the exercise of critical and active citizenship. It results from an investigation carried out with the purpose of evaluating the importance of the discussion of ethical dilemmas for an adequate understanding of science and the promotion of citizen experience. The motivation for the thematic of the paper arose from thereading of the book entitled "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks." The research activities were developed using the IBSE-7E's methodology with the integration of Web 2.0 tools into the curriculum. The results of the research activities indicated that the exercise of citizenship in a critical and active way is related to the ability of citizens to critically evaluate the effects of science and technology in society. Hence, the discussion of controversial topics of this nature needs to be considered in school scientific education for it to achieve its purposes. |

Es el resultado de una investigación realizada para evaluar la importancia de discutir dilemas éticos para una comprensión adecuada de la ciencia y para la promoción de la experiencia ciudadana. La motivación para el tema vino de leer el libro "La vida inmortal de Henrietta carece". Las actividades de investigación se desarrollaron a través de la metodología IBSE-7E, integrando herramientas Web 2.0 en el plan de estudios. Los resultados indicaron que el ejercicio de la ciudadanía de manera crítica y activa está relacionado con la capacidad de los ciudadanos para evaluar críticamente los efectos de la ciencia y la tecnología en la sociedad. De ello se deduce que la discusión de temas controvertidos de esta naturaleza debe considerarse en la educación científica de la escuela para que pueda lograr sus propósitos.O presente artigo parte da premissa de que cabe à escola promover, por meio da educação científica, condições para o exercício da cidadania crítica e ativa. Resulta de uma investigação realizada com a finalidade de avaliar a importância da discussão de dilemas éticos para uma compreensão adequada da ciência e para a promoção da vivência cidadã. A motivação pela temática ocorreu a partir da leitura do livro "A vida Imortal de Henrietta Lacks". As atividades investigativas foram desenvolvidas por meio da metodologia IBSE-7E's, integrando no currículo as ferramentas da Web 2.0. Os resultados indicaram que o exercício da cidadania de forma crítica e ativa está relacionado com a capacidade dos cidadãos avaliarem criticamente os efeitos da ciência e da tecnologia na sociedade. Depreende-se disso, de que a discussão de temas controversos dessa natureza precisam ser considerados na educação científica escolar para que a mesma atinja as suas finalidades.
