Ethical discussions for an adequate understanding of science as an institution and citizen experience

This article starts from the premise that it is the responsibility of the school to promote, through scientific education, conditions for the exercise of critical and active citizenship. It results from an investigation carried out with the purpose of evaluating the importance of the discussion of ethical dilemmas for an adequate understanding of science and the promotion of citizen experience. The motivation for the thematic of the paper arose from thereading of the book entitled "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks." The research activities were developed using the IBSE-7E's methodology with the integration of Web 2.0 tools into the curriculum. The results of the research activities indicated that the exercise of citizenship in a critical and active way is related to the ability of citizens to critically evaluate the effects of science and technology in society. Hence, the discussion of controversial topics of this nature needs to be considered in school scientific education for it to achieve its purposes.
