Biologia.Este trabalho tem como objetivo refletir sobre o status moral dos animais não humanos sob uma perspectiva histórica, trazendo a teoria ética de Peter Singer como ponto-chave para a inserção dos animais na esfera de consideração moral. Uma pesquisa bibliográfica é realizada visando trazer uma retrospectiva do status moral dos animais através da análise crítica de como os animais eram retratados nos textos dos pensadores mais influentes de sua época, desde os textos bíblicos mais antigos até os dos filósofos contemporâneos. É ressaltado como os animais eram vistos na sociedade e o tratamento a que eram submetidos, como permaneceram à margem dos debates éticos e pouca ou nenhuma consideração moral lhes foi atribuída no contexto da história da filosofia. Em seguida, é introduzida a teoria ética de Peter Singer que propõe uma mudança significativa na forma como são pensadas as relações entre humanos e animais ao desenvolver o Princípio da Igual Consideração de Interesses. Este princípio defende a senciência como a única base eticamente defensável para delimitação do círculo de consideração moral, pois reflete a própria capacidade de ter interesses e, portanto, devemos considerar os interesses de todos os seres sencientes de maneira igualitária. No âmbito da ética singeriana, é abordado também o conceito de Pessoa do autor, dos critérios necessários para pertencer a essa categoria às implicações de se considerar certas espécies de animais não humanos como Pessoas. Por fim, são analisadas as consequências da ética de Peter Singer na alimentação humana partindo do pressuposto que o consumo de produtos de origem animal está em desacordo com o princípio da igual consideração de interesses ao sobrepor um interesse menor dos humanos em satisfazer seu paladar ao interesse maior dos animais em evitar o sofrimento e morte prematura, de forma que a dieta vegana surge como uma maneira de assegurar que este princípio ético seja respeitado.This work aims to reflect on the moral status of non-human animals under a historical perspective, bringing Peter Singer's ethical theory as a key point for the insertion of animals in the sphere of moral consideration. A bibliographical research is carried out aiming to bring a retrospective of the moral status of animals through a critical analysis of how animals were portrayed in the texts of the most influential thinkers of their time, from the most ancient biblical texts to contemporary philosophers. It highlights how animals were seen in society and the treatment they were subjected to, how they remained on the margins of ethical debates and how little or no moral consideration was given to them in the history of philosophy. Then, Peter Singer's ethical theory is introduced, which proposes a significant change in the way human-animal relationships are thought by developing the Principle of Equal Consideration of Interests. This principle defends sentience as the only ethically defensible basis for delimiting the circle of moral consideration, as it reflects the very capacity to have interests and, therefore, we must consider the interests of all sentient beings equally. In the scope of singerian ethics, the author's concept of Person is also addressed, from the necessary criteria to belong to this category to the implications of considering certain species of non human animals as Persons.
