Summary: Context: Anxiety and depression are prevailing neuropsychiatric conditions and are associated with chronic diseases, pain, loss of autonomy, dependence to perform routine activities, solitude. Depression often has a cause-and-effect relationship with other diseases, such as those who are more predisposed to acute myocardial infarction, systemic arterial hypertension and diabetes mellitus, which increase the likelihood of depression. Aim: The present study aimed to estimate the frequency of anxiety and depression in patients of both sexes with peripheral obstructive vascular disease admitted to a tertiary hospital. Methods: This was a descriptive, cross-sectional study, with a random sample selected consecutively for all hospitalized patients. To assess anxiety and depression, was used the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS). Results: The prevalence of anxiety in these patients was 24.4%, with an association between anxiety and monthly family income, smoking, and systemic arterial hypertension. The prevalence of depression was 27.6%, with associations between depression and female sex, in a stable or married union, surviving with up to a minimum wage, non-alcoholic and hypertensive. Conclusions: It is possible to perceive that these are serious diseases regarding the secondary risks for increasing the chances of fatal cardiovascular diseases and for predisposing to suicide.
