Resumo: Occlusion is a term that addresses a set of dynamic and functional relationships between the dental surfaces that participate in the occlusion and the other structures of the stomatognathic system. An abnormal occlusal relationship that presents excessive forces, premature contacts or occlusal interferences can cause problems or pathologies. To be considered a pathology strictly related to occlusion, its main causative factor must be an altered occlusion, even if other conditions may be related. The main pathologies related to occlusion are tooth mobility, tooth wear and non-carious cervical lesions. Thus, it is important to know the specific characteristics of pathologies strictly associated with occlusion, to indicate the most appropriate recommendations and treatment, as well as to reach an adequate diagnosis. Thus, the objective of this work is, through a literature review, to present the pathologies strictly associated with occlusion. For this, a bibliographic survey was carried out from a search carried out in the electronic database of the National Library of Medicine of the United States (PubMed), as well as relevant textbooks and reference articles. The review included articles published in English and Portuguese. Due to the concepts of occlusion, requiring a historical review, emphasis was not given to a specific period of time. Understanding the pathologies strictly related to occlusion strengthens the diagnosis of several pathologies, and provides a better guide in the rehabilitation treatment.
