Summary: This article addresses the theory of action and systems theory in the works of Talcott Parsons and Jürgen Habermas. It is divided in two main parts: the first presents the key stages  of  Parsons’  theoretical  evolution  and  the  second  deals  with  the  critical reconstruction  of  the  Parsonian  theory  by  Habermas.  Based  on  a  presentation  of Parsons’ theory, the primary objective of this article is to highlight how this author’s theoretical legacy reverberates in contemporary social theory, as exemplified in the critical appropriation of the Parsonian proposal by Habermas’ theory of communicative action.
