Rosana Paulino: about invented natures on black bodies

Summary: The objective of this article is to present an analysis of works by artist Rosana Paulino, developed using archive images from the historical period of colonial Brazil, when invented natures of black bodies were created, with the purpose of justifying hierarchical relationships between races, through pseudoscientific proof. To do this, we take a closer look at the  procedures, critical constructions and callings present in the artist’s book ¿História natural? By extension, we also work with theoretical considerations conveyed in the literature on art and descolonial criticism. We verify the strength of a production that subverts mechanisms of downgrading and exclusion from the past, which still echoes today, with a creation that constitutes a call,  through art, to other ways of life that consider respect for differences and  equal rights.

We verify the strength of a production that subverts mechanisms of downgrading and exclusion from the past, which still echoes today, with a creation that constitutes a call,  through art, to other ways of life that consider respect for differences and  equal rights. El objetivo de este artículo es presentar un análisis de las obras de la artista Rosana Paulino, desarrolladas a partir de imágenes de archivos del período histórico del Brasil colonial, donde se crearon naturalezas inventadas sobre cuerpos negros, con el objetivo de justificar las relaciones jerárquicas entre razas, por medio de pruebas pseudocientíficas. Para eso, analizamos más atentamente los procedimientos, las construcciones críticas y los destaques presentes en el libro de la artista ¿História natural?. Por consecuencia, trabajamos con consideraciones teóricas transmitidas en la literatura sobre arte y crítica descolonial. Comprobamos la fuerza de una producción que quiere cambiar mecanismos de interiorización y exclusión del pasado, que aún tienen sus efectos en nuestra actualidad, con una creación que constituye un llamado, por medio del arte, a otras formas de vida que consideren el respeto a las diferencias y a la igualdad de los derechos.O objetivo deste artigo é apresentar uma análise de trabalhos da artista Rosana Paulino, desenvolvidos com o uso de imagens de arquivos do período histórico do Brasil colonial, quando foram criadas naturezas inventadas sobre corpos negros, com o propósito de justificar relações hierárquicas entre raças, através de comprovação pseudocientífica. Para isso, lançamos um olhar mais atento sobre os procedimentos, as construções críticas e os chamamentos presentes no livro de artista ¿História natural? Por extensão, trabalhamos também com considerações teóricas veiculadas na literatura sobre arte e crítica descolonial.
