From ornament to total design: a historic overview from Hal Foster

Summary: This paper takes up Hal Foster’s controversial “Design and Crime” to outline a brief historical overview of the relationship between Art Nouveau ornamentation and what the author calls “total design”. To this end, I revisit the nineteenth-century debate about ornament and explain how the cult of personality emerges with the ornamentation of public life. From this, I argue that the diffusion of design in contemporary life is linked to the behavior of the “designer of yourself”. Finally, I point out that Foster’s provocation remains current, indicating that, contrary to the narratives that expose design as the overcoming of ornament, design continues to operate largely as an ornamental rationality.

Comienzo repasando el debate sobre el ornamento del siglo XIX y explicando cómo surge el culto a la personalidad con la ornamentación de la vida pública. A partir de esto, sostengo que la difusión del diseño en la vida contemporánea está vinculada a la conducta del “diseñador de sí mismo”. Finalmente, señalo que la provocación de Foster sigue siendo actual, indicando que, contrariamente a las narrativas que exponen el diseño como una superación del ornamento, el diseño continúa operando en gran basado en una racionalidad ornamental.Este artigo retoma o polêmico texto “Design e crime”, de Hal Foster, para delinear um breve panorama histórico acerca das relações entre a ornamentação do Art Nouveau e o que o autor denomina “design total”. Para tanto, revisito o debate oitocentista em torno do ornamento e explico como o culto à personalidade emerge com a ornamentação da vida pública. A partir disso, sustento que a difusão do design na vida contemporânea está atrelada a uma conduta do “designer de si”.
