The restoration of the textile tabernacle of the Venerable Confraternity of Our Lady of Lampedusa: looking into the sacred

Resumo: Tabernacles are the heart of the main altar of a church and must be in good condition to fulfill the sacred function of the Eucharist. In Rio de Janeiro, in the Centro neighborhood, at the Venerable Confraternity of Our Lady of Lampedusa, located in the Lampedusa Church, there is a rare surviving example of a sacrarium made of textile structure. It consists of damask linings with golden metallic trimmings, fringes, cotton, and synthetic fabrics. Interventions on active religious objects need to be in constant dialogue between the needs of worship and the conservators’ ethics. In this sense, museum conservation was the methodology used, respecting the temporal marks and minimal intervention. This article presents the processes of material identification, condition report, and restoration of our precious heritage, which may once again shine brightly.

En la ciudad de Río de Janeiro, en el casco Centro, la Venerable Cofradía de Nuestra Señora de Lampadosa, ubicada en la Iglesia de Lampadosa, tiene un raro ejemplo de sagrario sobreviviente de estructura textil. Se trata de forros de damasco con acabados y flecos metálicos dorados, tejidos de algodón y sintéticos. Por ello, en objetos de naturaleza religiosa activa, debemos estar en constante diálogo entre las necesidades del culto y la ética profesional del conservador. En este sentido, la metodología de conservación museística, es decir, respetando las marcas temporales en la materia y con la mínima intervención, fue llevada a cabo. Este artículo aborda los procesos de identificación material, estado de conservación y restauración de nuestro preciado patrimonio, que puede volver a brillar.Os tabernáculos são o coração do altar-mor e devem estar em boas condições de preservação para cumprir a sagrada função da Eucaristia. Na cidade do Rio de Janeiro, no bairro Centro, na Venerável Confraria de Nossa Senhora da Lampadosa, localizada na Igreja da Lampadosa, encontra-se um raro exemplo sobrevivente de sacrário em estrutura têxtil. Trata-se de forros damascados com acabamentos em passamanarias e franjas metálicas douradas, tecidos em algodão e sintéticos. As intervenções em objetos religiosos ativos precisam estar em diálogo constante entre as necessidades de culto e a ética profissional do conservador. Nesse sentido, a abordagem deste trabalho pautou-se na metodologia de conservação museológica, respeitando as marcas temporais na matéria e com intervenção mínima.
