Summary: | Phytoliths are microscopic structures of hydrated silica (SiO2.nH2O) produced in plant tissues. The interest in studying phytoliths has grown significantly in recent years in Brazil and worldwide due to their wide variety of uses, from archaeology to forensic sciences, and their highly interdisciplinary nature. Phytolith analysis has recently been understood as a superdiscipline, which pervades different leves of analysis. Studies on phytolith production, shape and size diversity, and analysis/interpretation of assemblages preserved in soils and sediments have contributed to understanding paleoenvironmental and paleoarchaeobotanical questions. Considering the relevance and visibility that phytolith analysis has presented, especially in Brazil, a review of the main aspects related to this technique and its applications in Brazil is presented in this study. |

O interesse pelo estudo dos fitólitos tem crescido significativamente nos últimos anos no Brasil e no mundo devido a sua grande variedade de usos, desde a arqueologia até a medicina legal e por sua natureza altamente interdisciplinar. A análise fitolítica recentemente tem sido entendida como uma superdisciplina, que perpassa por diferentes escalas de análise. Estudos referentes a produção de fitólitos, variações de forma e tamanho e, a análise/interpretação de assembleias preservadas em solos e sedimentos têm contribuído para a compreensão de questões paleoambientais e paleoarqueobotânicas. Com vistas a relevância e visibilidade que a análise de fitólitos tem apresentado, sobretudo no Brasil, se apresenta aqui uma revisão sobre os principais aspectos relacionados a essa técnica e as aplicações no Brasil.
