O património literário e a casa popular algarvia: uma perspetiva turístico-cultural

The growing need to diversify the tourism offer in “sun and sea” coastal regions together with the rise of cultural tourism and of the literary tourism niche leads to the appreciation of regional cultural resources. This paper focuses on the Algarve (Portugal) region, and by linking literary resources and architectural/iconological heritage connected with the algarvian traditional house, aims at presenting opportunities for identity strengthening that will value the tourist experience. Thus, from the content analysis of texts by Raul Brandão, Emiliano da Costa, António Ramos Rosa, Teresa Rita Lopes, Miguel Torga and Yvette K. Centeno, in which the Algarve is the background, we have analysed literary representations of the algarvian vernacular house and identified its characteristics and functions of its architectural elements. The analysis allowed highlighting the existence of interpretative narratives that reinforce the genius loci or the spirit of the place, stressing the symbiotic association between tangible and intangible heritage.
