Summary: The following research paper evaluates through a strengths, weaknesses, threats, and opportunities analysis how competitive rights owners can be with an over-the-top Direct-to Consumer streaming platform. The strengths and weaknesses will be assessed through the five components of the business model canvas. It was elaborated that the data collection and close relationship to sports fans is a relevant strength. The loss of media rights revenues, in contrast, is an important challenge for right owners when relying exclusively on their OTT platform. An analysis with the BCG-Matrix showed that the D2C offer of rights owners has currently a question mark status.
