Pretendemos estudar a possível relação entre a memória, a consolidação urbana e a identidade, articulando o estudo em três momentos fundamentais: a construção das fortificações, a implantação da indústria e a cidade do século XX e XXI. Na leitura da cidade, procuramos ter um olhar crítico sobre o desenvolvimento da malha urbana e da frente ribeirinha, destacando a sua influência no traçado dos bairros. Paralelamente estudamos as consequências do rápido crescimento urbano em função da implementação das indústrias. Identificamos os fragmentos e elementos arquitectónicos, que subsistem apesar das transformações urbanas. Lemos a memória, como parte integrante da identidade deste lugar – Setúbal.The following investigation intends to study the evolution of the urban nucleus of Setúbal, between the forteenth and twenty-first century, specifically the area that was before delimited by the walls. We intend to establish the relationship between memory and urban consolidation, articulating the study of the three fundamental moments for the constitution of its identity: the construction of fortifications, the industry implantation and the city of the twentieth century to the present. While reading the city, we try to have a critical look at the development of the urban network and the riverfront, highlighting its influence in the layout of the neighborhoods. Simultaneously we study the consequences of the rapid growth caused by the industry. We identify the fragments and architectural elements that survived the urban transformations.
