Resumo da tese: O excesso de peso e a obesidade são uma epidemia em constante crescimento. Mais de 1,5 biliões de adultos têm excesso de peso, sendo que cerca de 500 milhões são obesos. A infertilidade é a incapacidade biológica de um individuo contribuir para a conceção e vários estudos demonstram a associação entre o excesso de gordura corporal e a fertilidade nas mulheres. A obesidade perturba o complexo ambiente hormonal que funciona em equilibrio para controlar o ciclo menstrual, a ovulação e o desenvolvimento do endométrio. Para além disso prejudica a fertilidade feminina exercendo o seu efeito através da ação da leptina, da insulina e de outras adipocinas. Neste trabalho foi abordado o efeito negativo, a nível hormonal que a obesidade e o excesso de peso têm na função reprodutora das mulheres, verificando-se efeitos ao nível das hormonas sexuais, dos ciclos menstruais, da ovulação e do desenvolvimento do endométrio. Apesar da relação negativa entre a obesidade e infertilidade ser bem definida, os mecanismos de ação não estão ainda bem definidos, sendo por isso necessário a permanente investigação nesta área.Thesis abstract: Overweight and obesity are constantly rising. More than 1,5 billion adults are overweight, 500 million being obese. Infertility is the biological inability of an individual in contributing to conceiving. There are studies that demonstrate the association between the excess of body fat and fertility in women. The complex hormonal balance that works in order to control menstrual cycle, ovulation and endometrial development is affected by obesity. Besides, obesity also impairs female fertility by affecting leptin, insulin and other adipokine´s concentration. This bibliographic revision is about the negative hormonal effect that overweight and obesity have upon women´s reproductive function. There are imbalance of sexual hormones, disturbances in menstrual cycle, ovulation, and endometrial development. Although there is evidence that supports the relation between obesity and infertility, the action pathways are not well defined yet. Therefore, it is really necessary to investigate more and refresh the information that already exists.
