These platforms have placed greater emphasis on the increasingly prevalent digital economy, resulting in a greater need for regulation of their respective digital markets.Indeed, countries grapple with the emergence of companies that wield substantial influence as key players in the modern economy. These companies not only hold significant economic power but also control their users’ information and personal data, acting as public administrations. Through this control, they can influence masses, becoming, in the view of many authors and researchers, a threat to proclaimed liberal democracies and, mutatis mutandis, to states considered authoritarian.This context has led to regulatory responses that are present globally. While there are differences between countries and institutions in how they approach this issue, these nevertheless share a similar guiding foundation. Relevant cases include the major economic blocs of our time: the European Union, China, and the United States. These responses reflect the policies, ideologies, and understandings of these blocs’ social, cultural, and economic life.Finally, we will address a term widely used by policy-makers worldwide: digital sovereignty. As we will see, this term carries different connotations and meanings depending on the respective stakeholders.Em pleno mundo em mudança, com sucessivos acontecimento políticos, económicos e sociais a ocorrerem, outro evento, a desenrolar-se ao longo dos últimos anos, é o surgimento das grandes plataformas no meio digital. Estas vieram enfatizar ainda mais a economia digital em constante expansão, resultando numa necessidade crescente de regulamentação dos respetivos mercados digitais.De facto, os Estados deparam-se com o fenómeno de empresas que se tornam agentes com um poder considerável na economia contemporânea. Essas empresas controlam informações e dados pessoais dos seus utilizadores, assemelhando-se a Administrações Públicas. Através disso, conseguem influenciar massas, sendo consideradas, por muitos autores e investigadores, uma ameaça às proclamadas democracias liberais, e, mutatis mutandis, também para os Estados considerados autoritários.Este contexto levou a respostas regulatórias que estão presentes em todo o globo. Embora existam diferenças entre países e instituições na abordagem a este fenómeno, essas abordagens não deixam de ter uma base orientadora semelhante. Destacam-se os grandes blocos económicos dos nossos dias, como a União Europeia, China e EUA.
