Este trabalho aborda, de forma sistemática, uma realidade museológica específica – o Museu Arqueológico e Lapidar Infante D. Henrique, de Faro – numa perspectiva histórica e crítica sobre a mesma, desde a sua fundação até à actualidade, enquadrando-a o melhor possível nas políticas culturais desenvolvidas pela tutela a que esteve sempre afecta – a Câmara Municipal de Faro. Por outro lado, procura realçar as personalidades mais relevantes para a evolução gradual que o Museu tem sofrido, estando atento aos momentos de maior dinâmica ou estagnação, ao processo de incorporação de objectos, aos principais eventos que tiveram lugar nas suas instalações, ou por ele organizados noutras dependências, e a diversas produções documentais em redor dos seus espólios. Apresenta ainda as projecções concebidas para um eventual futuro do Museu, cuja designação tende a tomar o nome genérico de Museus Municipais, graças à sua tendência para a incorporação de vários núcleos museológicos, alargados a outros espaços, mediante um trabalho de reformulação iniciado em 1998 e um projecto de arquitectura que nos mostra a amplitude de tais trabalhos de transformação e alargamento. Por fim, apresenta a inevitável contextualização histórica do Museu, integrando-o na crescente preocupação patrimonial e cultural de oitocentos, sem se esquecer as transformações sociais e económicas daquela centúria, o monumento onde o mesmo está sediado e o enquadramento diplomático e legal que suporta, não só o objecto de estudo, mas também todas as instituições culturais, dentro e fora do nosso país. / *** Abstract - This work deals, in a systematic way, with a specific museum – Museu Arqueológico e Lapidar Infante D. Henrique, of Faro – in a historic and critic perspective, since its foundation to the present day, framing it, as well as possible, in the cultural politics developed by the City Hall of Faro, institution to which it has always been affected. On the other hand, it tries to emphasize the personalities that had more important roles in the gradual evolution of the Museum, with special attention to the moments of greater dynamics or stagnation, together with the incorporation of objects, the principal events that took place in its accommodations, or that had been organized by it in other places, and the various documentation produced about its remains. It also presents the plans that were conceived for a hypothetical future Museum, which will seem to take the generic name of Municipal Museums, due to the tendency to incorporate different nucleus, expending to other places, after a reformulation work initiated in 1998 and an architecture project that shows us the amplitude of the transformation and enlargement actions. At last, it presents the inevitable historical context of the Museum, contextualized within the growing cares towards the heritage and culture of the 19th century, without forgetting the social and economic transformations of that century, the monument where the museum is installed and the diplomatic and legal aspects that provide the background, not only to our object of study, but also to all the cultural institutions, inside or outside our country.
