As far as medieval religious architecture from (and since) the 12th century is concerned, this view materializes in the idea that the verticalism associated with the Gothic style (or mode) was a way of lifting and leading spiritually unto God the soul, the mind and the heart of the believers. This brief introductory note seeks to present the novel The Spire (1964), by Sir William Golding, awarded The Booker Prize (1980) and The Nobel Prize for Literature (1983). As espacializações ou topografias mentais que, mesmo inconscientemente, fazemos tendem a situar Deus, o Céu e o Bem nas alturas e, por conseguinte, o Diabo, o Inferno e o Mal nas profundezas; desconhecemos, todavia, a existência de estudos e bibliografias específicos sobre este ponto das representações teológicas e morais. No que toca, por exemplo, à arquitetura religiosa medieval dos séculos XII e posteriores, esta conceção materializa-se na ideia de que a matriz de verticalidade associada ao estilo (ou modo) gótico constituiria uma forma de elevar e conduzir espiritualmente até Deus a alma, o pensamento ou o coração dos crentes.
